8-year-old girl blinded in her left eye by two boys shot with a slingshot
Title: Tragedy in Jiangsu as 8-Year-Old Blinded by Slingshot Attack, Netizens Demand Stricter Laws

24 July 2023
Anan, an 8-year-old girl from Shuyang County, Jiangsu Province, has become the latest victim of a brutal attack in China. On July 1st, two boys around 13 years old threw a steel ball at her with a slingshot, causing her left eyeball to rupture and leading to blindness. The perpetrators have not been held criminally responsible due to their age falling under the age of criminal responsibility.
The incident has sparked outrage among Chinese social media users, who are demanding stricter laws to protect minors from such acts of violence. One Weibo user wrote, "If we don't sentence them now, when they grow up, if they have some money, I'm afraid it's even more of a scourge."
Anan's mother, Ms Si, has shared her heartbreak over the incident, stating that doctors had removed a steel bullet about 8mm in diameter from her daughter's eye. She fears for Anan's remaining eye, as she could potentially lose vision in it as well.
The case highlights the weaknesses in China's legal system when dealing with minor criminals. The current laws do not allow minors under 14 years old to be held accountable for major criminal acts, leaving little recourse for victims like Anan. Some users have called for changes to the Criminal Law to address this issue and hold minors responsible for their actions.
The online reaction to the attack has been overwhelmingly negative, with many calling for severe consequences for the perpetrators. One user suggested gouging out the eyes of the two boys, while another commented, "You're putting the cart before the horse, aren't you? The Juvenile Protection Act is supposed to protect the victim, not the abuser."
The case has sparked a heated debate on Chinese social media, with many demanding justice for Anan and urging authorities to take stronger action against minor criminals. However, it remains unclear whether any legal action will be taken against the two boys involved in the attack.
