The Dutch police have confirmed that the body found in the water near the New West district of Amsterdam is that of 23-year-old Luomeng, a graduate of Tsinghua University. Luomeng, who was a philosophy major at Tsinghua University, had been studying for his master's degree at the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation in Amsterdam since August 2024. He was last seen on February 23, and his family and friends had been searching for him for nearly a month. The Dutch police had launched an investigation and searched the area where Luomeng was last seen, but no breakthrough had been made until the discovery of the body on March 21.

The investigation into Luomeng's disappearance began on February 23, 2025, when he was seen near a supermarket close to his apartment. Despite numerous searches by his family, friends, and classmates, he could not be found. It was not until February 24 that his classmates realized something was amiss, as they were unable to contact him for a group project. On February 26, a classmate who lived in the same dormitory building as Luomeng called the police, who then entered Luomeng's room and reported normal signs of life, advising his classmates to wait a couple of days to see if the situation would resolve itself.
The university also attempted to reach out to Luomeng via phone and email but received no response. According to his classmates, Luomeng had not shown any signs of psychological distress before his disappearance. A close friend of Luomeng's, who had known him for many years, echoed this sentiment, stating that she had not noticed anything out of the ordinary in the days leading up to his disappearance. Luomeng was described by his university classmates as introverted but kind, with a passion for academics and artistic talent, particularly in playing the piano.
The discovery of Luomeng's body has sent shockwaves through the Chinese community in the Netherlands, and many are waiting for the police to release more information about the cause of his death. The incident has also raised concerns about the safety of Chinese students studying abroad and the need for greater support and resources to help them navigate foreign environments. The Chinese embassy in the Netherlands has issued a statement reminding Chinese citizens in the country to be aware of safety risks, such as theft and telephone scams, and to stay in touch with family and friends to avoid long-term "disconnections" that might cause concern.
The police have now confirmed that the body found in the lake is indeed Luomeng, but the cause of his death remains under investigation, with no possibilities ruled out at this stage. The Dutch police had deployed helicopters and search teams in the area where Luomeng was last seen, but initially, these efforts did not yield any new breakthroughs. It was noted that one of Luomeng's phones showed activity on the 10th day after his disappearance, but this lead did not immediately result in finding him.
The news of Luomeng's death has sparked widespread attention and discussion online, with many people expressing curiosity about the name "Luosengmen" and its seemingly ominous connection to "the gates of hell". Many netizens have taken to social media to comment on the unsettling coincidence, with some calling it a "chilling" and "unsettling" irony. Others have used the opportunity to remind Chinese students studying abroad to be mindful of their safety, with one user posting a video on Weibo saying "this name already shows that the child had psychological issues, why did they still let him go?" The outpouring of comments and condolences has highlighted the concern and sympathy that many people have for the family and friends of the deceased, as well as the broader Chinese community abroad.
