Evergrande Dance Troupe Leader's Response Sparks Controversy Amid Founder's Arrest

In recent weeks, Chinese social media has been abuzz with speculation and rumors surrounding the arrest of prominent real estate mogul Xu Jiayin, founder of Evergrande Group. Particular attention has been given to his close association with the company's cultural wing - the Guangzhou Evergrande Folk Dance Troupe. The dance troupe's leader, Bai Shan, has been at the center of heated online debates since Xu's arrest.

On November 5, Bai posted a short video on Weibo in which she addressed the various rumors and allegations circulating online. However, instead of clarifying or dispelling doubts, her response has triggered further controversy, with many users criticizing her diction, grammar, and alleged connections to Xu Jiayin.

In the video, Bai is seen stating her innocence and repeatedly mentioning the term "给予 (gai y0)," which means "give" in English. However, many netizens have pointed out that the correct word should be "给予 (jya)". The discrepancy in her use of the two words has led some to question her command of the Chinese language and her suitability as the leader of a renowned dance troupe.

In addition to her linguistic faux pas, Bai has also been criticized for referring to herself as a "simple dancer" and trying to distance herself from Xu Jiayin. Several Weibo users have pointed out that she resides in a luxury apartment in Shenzhen Bay, the price of which is estimated to be around 1.7 billion yuan (approximately US$257 million). Many netizens argue that her extravagant lifestyle is incompatible with the modest background she claims for herself.

Furthermore, the number of dancers insured by the Guangzhou Evergrande Folk Dance Troupe has reportedly decreased dramatically in recent years, from 78 in 2017 to zero now. This has raised concerns about the troupe's financial stability and the working conditions of its performers.

As the situation evolves, Bai's video response and attempts to clear her name have backfired, sparking further criticism and scrutiny from social media users. While the ongoing investigation into Evergrande Group and its founder continues, the spotlight remains on Bai Shan and the Guangzhou Evergrande Folk Dance Troupe, as they try to navigate through this tumultuous period.
