Beijing has experienced an unprecedented level of extreme rainfall over the past week, with a value of 744.8 millimetres recorded at Wangjiahuayuan Reservoir in Changping between 20:00 on 29 July and 07:00 on 2 August 2023. This extreme rainfall has surpassed any previous records in the area, marking the first instance of such a heavy rain event since instrumental measurements began 140 years ago. The impact of this weather phenomenon has been widespread, with floods causing damage to roads and infrastructure across Beijing.

In response to the severe flooding, the Chinese army has mobilized to provide relief efforts in affected areas. On 1 August, four transport helicopters from the 81st Army Group took off from an airfield in Fangshan District to deliver food, mackintoshes, blankets, and other urgently needed supplies to disaster-stricken communities in Mentougou District. The total weight of materials delivered was over 2,000 kilograms.

The Beijing floods have also affected areas outside the capital city, such as Doudian Town in Yuzhuang Village, Fangshan District. On 1 August, armed police officers and soldiers waded through water to rescue stranded individuals, evoking gratitude from the rescued elderly people. This is not an isolated incident; armed police officers and soldiers have been working tirelessly in various disaster relief sites across Beijing.

The Chinese public has shown immense support for the flood-affected communities, with numerous examples of individuals and organizations stepping up to lend a helping hand. On social media platforms such as Weibo, netizens have shared their condolences and offered assistance, including providing temporary shelters, food, and other necessities.

For instance, a video of old tofu from Jinmen has gone viral on Weibo, with the creator donating all profits to flood relief efforts in Beijing. Additionally, the Chinese Youth Daily reported that a brigade of the 81st Army Group took off four transport helicopters loaded with emergency supplies for an airdrop mission to deliver food, m
