Renowned Author and Calligrapher Ma Xiwu: A Lifetime of Literary Contributions and Communist Loyalty

On March 28, 2024, the renowned author and calligrapher, Ma Xiwu, also known as Ma Sitong, passed away at the age of 110. Ma was born in Zhong County, Chongqing, and was the son of a wealthy family.

After participating in the "May Fourth" patriotic movement, Ma joined the Chinese Communist Party in 1938. Throughout his life, Ma was a prolific writer, known for his vivid depictions of the struggles and triumphs of the Chinese people. His works include "Those Times, Those People," "Sorrowful Ten Years," and "River of Sorrow," as well as the novel "The Bandit Captain," which was adapted into the hit film "Let the Bullets Fly." Ma's life was not without its challenges. During the "Fannan Incident" of 1941, Ma's wife, Liu Caoping, was arrested and later killed in prison. Ma wrote a poignant eulogy for his wife, in which he said, "You used your blood to make the people's red flag even more vibrant and beautiful.

Don't shed any more bitter tears. We will never be separated. We will be separated when it is time for us to be separated forever." Despite the difficulties he faced, Ma remained a dedicated Communist and a committed writer. In a 2021 interview, he said, "I have always been absolutely loyal to the Party. My life's work has been to serve the Party and the Chinese people. I have never wavered in my beliefs, even in the face of hardship and adversity."

Ma's passing has been met with an outpouring of grief and appreciation on Chinese social media. Netizens have praised his contributions to Chinese literature and his steadfast commitment to the Communist cause. "Ma Xiwu was a true giant of Chinese literature. His works captured the spirit of the Chinese people and inspired generations of readers. He will be deeply missed," wrote one Weibo user. "Ma Xiwu was a great patriot and a true believer in the Communist cause. He lived a long and inspiring life. Rest in peace, dear comrade," wrote another. In a statement, the Chinese Communist Party said, "Comrade Ma Xiwu was a dedicated Party member and a prolific writer. He made significant contributions to Chinese literature and calligraphy. His passing is a great loss to the Party and the Chinese people. We mourn his passing and express our deep condolences to his family and friends." Ma Xiwu's legacy will live on in the many works he left behind. He will be remembered as a revered author, a dedicated Communist, and a consummate patriot.
