In the face of the first cold wave of the Year of the Dragon, schools in multiple regions have suspended classes due to heavy snow and icy weather conditions, coinciding with the start of the workweek. This has left parents of the post-90s generation in a double bind, as they struggle to balance work and childcare.
The first snow of the year has swept across several provinces, causing traffic disruptions and school closures. In response to the extreme weather conditions, many schools have delayed the start of the school year, adding an additional burden on working parents who are already coping with the beginning of the workweek.
According to interviews conducted with post-90s parents, many feel torn between their responsibilities at work and their concerns for their children's safety. Chen, a post-90s mother, explained in an interview that both she and her husband had just started work the week before. Their child is starting the fourth grade this year, and with no one to help at home, Chen believes that delaying the school start is the right decision.
"If school had started as scheduled, parents would have had a huge problem with transportation and ensuring their children's safety," Chen said. "We hope the bad weather clears up soon so we can get our kids back to school."
The delayed school start has prompted many parents to create makeshift classrooms at home for their children. With many schools still closed, parents are faced with the challenge of managing work and homeschooling simultaneously. Social media users on China's Weibo platform have expressed their appreciation for these parents, acknowledging the struggles they face.
"Because the school year has been delayed, it is making parents even busier. They can't let go of their work responsibilities and are also concerned about their children being at home," one user wrote. "The extreme weather is happening too often, and working parents now have to juggle their jobs and taking care of their children. However, this is also an opportunity for various institutions to provide after-school care services to help working parents with childcare during the holidays."
Other users agree that delaying the start of school has provided an additional layer of safety for their children, but they also hope for a similar delay in work resumption. "Although school has been delayed, parents still have to go to work. Both sides need to be taken care of. It's really hard for all the parents out there!" one user added.
With the extreme weather conditions persisting, there have been calls for universities to consider delaying the start of the semester as well. One user pleaded, "Delay the start of school for us too. We have already started classes for a week now."
In the eastern province of Shandong, local authorities have opted to cancel school closures related to the snowstorm. Social media users have expressed concern for university students, calling on administrators to provide updates on potential delays and prioritizing student safety during these extreme weather conditions.
In response to these concerns, some institutions have already begun offering after-school care services to accommodate the needs of working parents during the school closures. As the country continues to grapple with extreme weather conditions, the balance between work and childcare remains a significant concern for parents across China.
