Zhang's story began in 2010, when she was a young university graduate full of promise and aspiration. But her life took a drastic turn when she met Zhong, who manipulated her into coming to his home. Once there, she was trapped and subjected to prolonged periods of physical and psychological abuse. Her captor would often lock her in the room, leaving her with limited access to food, water, and basic necessities.
Despite the unimaginable ordeal, Zhang found a way to survive. She was eventually able to escape and found refuge with a local family, who took her in and provided her with a new sense of belonging. However, the trauma she experienced during those five years left an indelible mark on her life. She would often suffer from headaches in enclosed spaces and experience sudden bouts of anger and anxiety when encountering strangers.
In 2010, Zhang was a university student with a bright future ahead of her. However, her life took a drastic turn when she was lured by Zhong Peng to his home under the pretext of a job opportunity. Unbeknownst to her, this was the beginning of a five-year-long nightmare. Zhong Peng, exploiting Zhang's innocence and trust, imprisoned her in his two-story house, subjecting her to inhumane conditions and repeated rape. Despite her desperate pleas for help, she was left trapped, with no means of escape or communication with the outside world. During this period, she became pregnant and gave birth to a daughter.
Zhang's life was forever changed during those five years of confinement. Her experiences had a profound impact on her physical and mental health, leaving her with deep-seated trauma and emotional scars. Her attempts to escape were constantly thwarted by Zhong, who manipulated and intimidated her, eroding her sense of self-worth.
It was not until 2024, when Zhang's information was discovered during a routine identity check by local authorities, that her ordeal came to an end. On April 15th, 2024, police officers finally located Zhang in the countryside, where she had been living in seclusion, her life drastically different from the one she had left behind. The police in Taoyuan County filed the case as a criminal case and detained Zhong Peng on suspicion of unlawful detention, but due to the statute of limitations, he was not prosecuted for this crime. On May 28, the procuratorate approved the arrest of Zhong Peng on suspicion of rape.
In the following months, Zhang cooperated fully with the investigation, detailing the atrocities she suffered at the hands of Zhong. Despite the emotional toll of recounting her experiences, she bravely testified against her captor. Her courage ultimately led to Zhong's arrest, conviction, and 15-year prison sentence for rape. On October 15, the Taoyuan County Court delivered its verdict, sentencing Zhong Peng to 15 years in prison for the crime of rape.
The verdict brought a sense of closure to Zhang Ling, who had endured unimaginable trauma and suffering at the hands of Zhong Peng. The court's decision was seen as a victory for justice and a testament to the determination of the authorities to hold perpetrators of such heinous crimes accountable.
Following the court's verdict, Zhang Ling, with the assistance of the Taoyuan County Public Security Bureau and the Women's Federation, was finally reunited with her parents after 14 years of separation. The Taoyuan County Women's Federation has also planned to provide financial assistance to Zhang Ling's current family and help her find employment opportunities, aiming to facilitate her integration into society. The organization is providing psychological counseling and support to help Zhang Ling and her daughter cope with their traumatic experiences. The Women's Federation has also arranged for Zhang Ling to be reunited with her daughter, who was born during her captivity. Furthermore, the Women's Federation is working to ensure that Zhang Ling receives the necessary medical care and social services to aid in her recovery.
With the support of the local women's federation, Zhang was able to reconnect with her family, reestablish contact with her parents, and take the first steps towards rebuilding her life. Zhang's story serves as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and a sobering reminder of the need for vigilance against such heinous crimes.
