Delivery of Shame: E-commerce Platform Under Fire After Courier Harasses Customer Over Condom Purchase
A recent incident in Chengdu, China, has sparked widespread concern over the protection of personal privacy in online shopping. A woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, ordered a box of condoms online through a popular e-commerce platform, only to be harassed by the delivery personnel after receiving her package. The delivery man, who was responsible for handing over the package, sent her a text message that was deemed harassing and intrusive, leaving the woman feeling violated and disturbed.

The woman had purchased the condoms and a box of disinfectant online, and the package was delivered to her doorstep by a male delivery personnel. She claimed that the delivery man had looked at her in a suggestive manner and had sent her a text message that read: "12 pieces, take care of your body, beautiful." The woman was outraged by the delivery man's behavior and demanded that the platform take action to protect users' privacy. This incident is not an isolated one, as there have been previous cases of delivery personnel harassing customers after discovering the contents of their packages.
On April 25, a woman surnamed Wang, from Chengdu, Sichuan Province, purchased a box of disinfectant and a box of condoms from an e-commerce platform's convenience store on Taobao. The order was delivered by a male courier, who gave her a suggestive look and later sent her a harassing text message. Wang felt that her personal privacy had been violated and wondered how the courier obtained her phone number, as it was supposed to be encrypted. She reported the incident to the customer service of the e-commerce platform and the delivery company, seeking an explanation and action against the courier.
The e-commerce platform has since refunded Wang's purchase in the form of a shopping voucher and promised to investigate the matter. The manager of the convenience store where the order was shipped from stated that the store takes personal privacy seriously and always conceals personal information on receipts and packages sensitive items like condoms in black bags to protect customers' privacy. However, the incident has raised concerns about the protection of personal privacy during online shopping and delivery, particularly for products related to sensitive or intimate matters.
The incident has sparked widespread concern over the professional ethics of delivery personnel and the protection of user privacy by e-commerce platforms. It is imperative for e-commerce platforms and delivery personnel to strictly maintain the confidentiality of user information and respect their privacy. Failure to do so will result in severe legal consequences. Every individual has a responsibility to protect others' privacy, and delivery personnel must adhere to strict confidentiality and refrain from using such information for harassment.
This incident also reflects a lack of professional ethics among delivery personnel, who are expected to provide services to customers while adhering to professional ethics. If they exploit their position to infringe upon customers' rights, it will have a negative impact on the industry as a whole. Businesses and platforms also have an inescapable responsibility to protect user privacy, and they must optimize their packaging and improve their technology and management to prevent information leaks.
The incident serves as a wake-up call, reminding us that regardless of our profession, we must uphold moral standards and respect others' privacy. E-commerce platforms and delivery personnel must take concrete actions to fulfill their responsibilities, safeguard consumers' rights, and foster a secure and trustworthy social environment. By doing so, we can prevent such unacceptable behavior and ensure that individuals, especially women, feel protected and respected in their daily lives. Ultimately, it is crucial for companies and individuals to prioritize ethics and empathy, recognizing that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.
